Chacewater leads the charge towards electric vehicles

Chacewater Energy Group, one of the SMEs that Cornwall New Energy is providing free support to, is organising an Electric Vehicle Day on Saturday 14th July. They are hoping to instigate an electric vehicle revolution in their local community.

The emerging community energy enterprise have signed-up four local car dealerships and two electric bike retailers to show a range of battery powered vehicles some of which will be available for test drives around the village.

The drop-in event, from 2-5pm at Chacewater Village Hall, will include at presentations at 3pm and 4pm by Matthew Trevaskis, Head of Electric Vehicles at the Renewable Energy Association and director of ecodrive Ltd.

Formed in spring 2017, Chacewater Energy Group is a community mutual advice service to help Chacewater become more energy self-reliant, fight climate change and share good ideas for free.

Group chair John Carley explained why they are holding the event: “Electric cars have a valuable role to play in our move towards a more sustainable future but many people are still sceptical about whether they can currently offer a viable alternative to fossil fuelled cars. We hope that by bringing together a number of local experts and electric and hybrid vehicles, they can get answers to questions about range, charge times and costs and other queries, which may help to fuel their interest in switching to green motoring in the future.”

Confirmed exhibitors include Dales of Cornwall with the Renault Zoe EV, Hawkins Motors of Hayle with the KIA Soul EV, Ocean BMW Falmouth with the BMWi8, and Carrs Land Rover of Threemilestone who will be showing the PHEV Range Rover and from West End Motors (Bodmin) a useful sized Nissan e NV200 van. Local bike shops Clive Mitchell Cycles and Top Gear Electric Bikes will also have electric bikes on show.

If their first electric vehicles event is a success, it is hoped that it may become an annual event for the village. Plans are underway by the group to hold a renewable energy fair in Chacewater on 15th September, with further details to be revealed shortly.

Chacewater Energy Group are working with the local charity Community Energy Plus, supported by the Cornwall New Energy Project, to develop renewable projects with businesses in Cornwall.
